The Stages of Detraining and How Long Running Fitness Lasts
How long can you go without running before you lose your running fitness, and what does detraining really mean? This article scared the crap out of me to research and write, if I’m being honest. My biggest problem as an athlete, even now, is that taking more than a day off (and taking a day off while at home, versus a day off because we’re traveling and in a car most of the day!) is REALLY REALLY HARD. One day, I feel OK. By day 2, I feel a little antsy. By day 3, I feel… like absolute $hit, unless ‘day off’ means ‘two or three hour hike or brisk walk.’ I suck at time off. So, the timing for this was great, since with the 50k race I did a couple weeks ago meant that I really did need a couple chill days to recover… so it was nice going into them knowing that they would be helpful to my fitness, not set me back! But don’t take my word for it, read what the experts said:
