Why HRV Matters—and How to Track it with HRV4Training App Founder Marco Altini on The Consummate Athlete
Marco Altini, creator of the HRV4Training app, has become one of my main resources as someone who knows when an athlete needs recovery and when he or she can go hard. He was one of the first guests on our podcast, and since then, I’ve hit him up for quotes for a bunch of articles ranging from how to recover to how to be more mindful, and so much more. HRV—heart rate variability—tracking is the one habit that I have done daily for almost two years now, and definitely my most consistent morning habit (we talk about why in the podcast, and I talk about it more here). Even if you don’t fully buy into the idea of HRV, I really recommend checking out the app anyway, since you essentially are setting a timer for five minutes of steady breathing and meditation, then answering a couple questions about the day before and how you’re feeling. So even if you don’t care about the measurement, it’s a great way to check in with yourself to start the day!
